I actually started It Must Have Been Something I Ate back when we went to Belize … it’s been my bathroom reading for far too long and I decided to finish it. First off, Steingarten is a certifiable misogynistic asshole. That said, these same qualities seem to give him focus and dedication to several gastronomic tasks, and I suppose that’s an asset. Still an asshole, though.
Anyhow, the book was an interesting read, with a mess of stuff I’ve not considered to this point. I am a bit dubious about his opinions on subjects about which I have a moderate amount of experience (such as espresso), but I find his criticism of the complete lack of quality beef on the east coast to be all too accurate. If you’re into food, and can push past his irritating wit and style, there’s some good content here. 6/10.
Keeping with eccentrics, Sarah and I watched Unzipped on Sunday. Isaac Mizrahi is crazy. Fashion, friends, is crazy. The documentary did an ok job of conveying the insanity of it all, but at the same time, tried to be a tad too artistic at times and got on my nerves. On the other hand, I’ll never look at a fashion show or magazine the same way again. 5/10.
