I have not yet jumped on the newest weblog bandwagon. Those of us who have been around for more than a couple of years on the Internet remember some earlier fads. Some examples: The blink tag, javascript background faders, and a sidebar full of advocacy banners.

Here’s a mock-up (alright, not a mock-up, just a screen capture of an arbitrary blog I happened upon this morning):

Yes, that’s right. Your life is incomplete unless every blog entry you post has a link to add your pedantry to every social networking and collaborative bookmarking site under the sun.

There are a few reasons I think this is dumb. First off, anybody that actively uses one or more of those sites is already familiar with how to do so. If they aren’t using some sort of bookmarklet, add-on, or the like, most likely they’re going to be even less likely to click your button that does the same thing. My second theory is that there is no person on earth that’s going to just sit there pushing sixteen little 16-pixel buttons to make sure they push your insightful commentary out to every website on earth. Finally, anybody who actively reads a bunch of blogs (and, specifically, anybody who is of the sort to aggregate popular link lists from social bookmarking/networking sites) is not going to do it directly, but rather via an aggregator. Unless the author is so self-important as to include an atrocity like the above directly in their article, that means the most likely user to take advantage of such a thing isn’t even going to see it.

If somebody has the goal of getting their blog entries or website pushed to all the social websites, that’s fine, but do it on content. Nobody is going to click the stupid little buttons.
