So I’m at my first conference, SDWest in this case. Conferences are … interesting. They’re a form of indirect compensation, and it’s nice to work for a company that sees value in them. Admittedly, I could probably learn everything here by reading several books, but it’s much more pleasant this way, and there are a lot of unique opportunities afforded me by the experience.
I spent the day in a tutorial on templates and generic programming. While I use STL containers pretty regularly, this seemingly remedial topic still taught me quite a bit, and reminded me of a lot of things that I didn’t understand when I was first told them.
I enjoyed the time so far, and I’m looking forward to the coming days even more, especially with some of the more advanced talks on memory management, functional paradigms, and the like.
I thought I was clever, because I purposely started staggering my sleep and waking times while I was still out east, moving the clock back 15-30 minutes each night, such that I wouldn’t suffer any jet lag once I got out here.
Well, turns out the joke’s on me. While I adjusted my sleep schedule, I didn’t adjust my eating patterns, so I’m starving at 9:00 and 15:00. Oh, and I’m exhausted at 18:00.
