When selling a compact disc, an online retailer should provide two options:
- Buy this compact disc.
- Buy this compact disc, refuse your right to ever return it, and also receive an immediate DRM-free digital copy of the contents of the disc for download.
The retailer gets something (a guarantee that they don’t have to deal with restocking or returns on this item; they can even stamp a huge sticker on it in bright red to make it all the more blatant, when you select this option) at the expense of a tiny little bit of bandwidth. The consumer gets instant delivery plus a physical backup (I know, I’m the only person on earth that cares about this). Win-win.
Just send me the royalty checks.
