We went down to Delaware on the Thursday prior to the fourth; we were heading to the Rehoboth area for the evening. There wasn’t a ton of traffic until we got about midway down the coast, and then it got sort of absurd. The approach was sort of like the approach into the cape, except the terminal destination isn’t nearly as nice as the cape.

Along the way we passed the Dover Air Force Base, home of two Air Mobility Command airlift wings. Driving along, we saw an unusually dense population of heterogeneous aircraft, whose purpose was made much more obvious once we saw the signs of the Air Mobility Command Museum. After some whimpering and begging, we ended up there for a couple of hours before continuing our journey to Rehoboth.

The museum is staffed by a number of air force retirees, who were eager to give us a tour of the premises and air craft. Unfortunately, they warned it would take three to four hours, so we decided to go on the self-guided tour. I think it would have been an interesting tour with the guides, but just didn’t have the time for it.

They had a bunch of old airlift aircraft, some of which we could enter. Since it was pretty bright and sunny, and there wasn’t much in the way of ventilation in the aircraft, they tended to close most of them up when the sun was out. The one cockpit we got into (a C-141 Starlifter II) was pretty hot and miserable.

While outside, we saw a C-5 doing several touch and go runs, which was pretty cool. Didn’t see any C-17 Globemaster IIIs, unfortunately, but they’re probably busy.

Definitely a cool museum to visit if you like planes and you have the time.
